To: All Students, Faculty and Staff at the UBC Vancouver campus
The Chan Centre for the Performing Arts at UBC is a highly acclaimed performance venue and a valued part of our province’s cultural fabric.
Following an internal review, the university has decided to situate the Chan Centre within the Faculty of Arts effective April 1, 2011.
Operating since 1999 under the portfolio of the Vice President, External, Legal and Community Relations, the Chan Centre has established strong relationships within the arts community and created a unique place for the exchange of ideas.
The university is committed to continue to build on its vision for an extraordinary home for thought-provoking, transformative experiences and the highest standard of performance and dialogue in support of UBC’s commitment to community engagement.
Integration with the Faculty of Arts holds the possibility of many new benefits. It will bring the Chan Centre into the same organizational structure as such other campus venues as the Museum of Anthropology, Freddy Wood Theatre, Belkin Gallery, Old Aud and Barnett Recital Hall, allowing for new opportunities for cross-promotion, ticketing and community use.
Being part of the province’s largest faculty will allow for new ways to support programming content and innovation in the creative and performing arts and humanities, and advance our common mission to serve the community and enhance the cultural life of the campus and our city.
The Faculty of Arts and the Chan Centre are committed to sustaining the current levels of access and programming enjoyed by our campus community. We will also aim to provide new opportunities for members of the broader arts and cultural groups to utilize this superb performing arts centre in the years ahead.
