To: All UBC Students, Faculty and Staff
I am pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Helen Burt as UBC’s new Associate Vice President, Research & International, effective September 1, 2011. Helen joins our office from UBC’s Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences, where she has served as Associate Dean, Research & Graduate Studies, since 2004. She holds an endowed professorship and is a principle investigator in CIHR and NSERC funded collaborative multidisciplinary research projects in the fields of nanomedicines and drug delivery.
Helen was seconded to serve for one year as Director of Research for Angiotech Pharmaceuticals, and was one of the founders (and has been a member of the leadership team) of the Centre for Drug Research and Development (CDRD). Her primary responsibility at CDRD has been the development of its innovative training program. She has also served for the past six years as a member of the Board of Directors of the Provincial Health Services Authority.
Helen has previous experience with the Office of Vice President, Research & International, having worked as this office’s coordinator for CIHR/MSFHR funding programs. She completed her PhD in pharmaceutics at UBC in 1980, and has broad knowledge of the UBC campus, its research environment and its many faculties and affiliated research hospitals.
Helen assumes this role from Dr. Don Brooks, who has skillfully and superbly served in this position for the past ten years, and who will continue to work with us as the new Director of SPARC, Support Programs to Advance Research Capacity.
We are fortunate to have someone with Helen’s talents, experience and breadth of knowledge of UBC’s research enterprise joining our office and we look forward to continuing to partner with the campus community in advancing the University’s research mission.
Vice President, Research & International
