To all UBC students, faculty and staff:
Stephen Owen, Vice President External, Legal and Community Relations, has made the decision not to stand for a second term. He has been a highly effective Vice President who has made outstanding contributions to the University.
“The five years I will have spent at UBC in this role have been like a breath of fresh air” said Owen. “Stephen Toope’s leadership in excellence, the warm friendship and collegiality of faculty and staff, and the exuberance of student life and community engagement make UBC the place to be in higher education in Canada and internationally.”
Despite his thorough enjoyment of his time at UBC, Stephen Owen says that he has decided to return to his earlier focus on mediation and public policy conflict resolution.
Further to Mr. Owen’s decision, I have struck a search committee to find a new Vice President. After a series of ongoing discussions and consultations, I have made a decision to increase this portfolio’s focus on communications and will change the title to Vice President, Communications and Community Partnership to reflect this.
A search committee has been established to recommend to the Board of Governors a new Vice President, Communications and Community Partnership (“the VP”) for the University of British Columbia, effective August 1, 2012.
The VP, responsible to the President, will provide strategic leadership to UBC to accomplish the vision, commitments, goals, and actions as set out in the University’s strategic plan, Place and Promise: The UBC Plan.
The VP will provide high level oversight for a complicated portfolio focusing on UBC’s communications with its external and internal communities, government and other constituencies.
The following have been appointed to the Committee:
– Stephen Toope, Chair
– Robert Fung [Board]
– Sumedha Sharma [Board and Vancouver student]
– Peter Dauvergne [Professor]
– Rosie Redfield [Professor]
– Ben Perrin [Professor]
– Wes Pue [Okanagan Campus]
– Mehak Tejani [Student]
– Jane Hutton [Direct Report]
– Linc Kesler [Direct Report]
– Paul Hollands [External member]
– Patricia Stevens, Secretary
The Committee is entering into a consultative process to define the main challenges of the portfolio, and in that context, to identify the background, experience and qualities we are seeking in prospective candidates, and then to recommend at least one candidate for appointment. Following the deliberations of the Committee, I will make a recommendation to the Board of Governors concerning the appointment of a candidate.
A position description is available at: http://president2.sites.olt.ubc.ca/files/2011/10/posdesvpccp2011oct.pdf
Please write or email the Committee in confidence through Patricia Stevens, Office of the President at 604-822-0663 or email@example.com if you would like to make a written submission to the Committee.
I strongly encourage you to participate in this important search process.
Stephen J. Toope
President and Vice-Chancellor
