To: All Students, Faculty and Staff at UBC’s Vancouver campus
UBC Get Ready to Shake Out on October 18th at 10:18 a.m.
The University is participating in ShakeOut BC on October 18 at 10:18 a.m. We’d like everyone on campus to join in practicing “Drop, Cover and Hold” and to learn what to do in the event of an earthquake.
In BC, minor earthquakes are not infrequent and a major earthquake will eventually occur in Vancouver. ShakeOut BC is the largest earthquake drill in Canadian history and a great way to prepare. This year, hundreds of thousands of people will participate province-wide.
You can participate in several ways:
1. At 10:18 a.m. on October 18th, everyone on campus should practice “Drop, Cover and Hold.” Learn more about ShakeOut BC and earthquake preparedness at UBC at www.emergency.ubc.ca/shakeout and check us out on Facebook.
2. Join us at UBC’s Earthquake Symposium on October 18th; Join Civil Engineers, Carlos Ventura and Liam Finn, for presentations on topics ranging from Earthquake Warnings, to Seismic Inspection of Buildings and Earthquake Preparedness at UBC. We’ll also demonstrate UBC’s Shake Table – a simulator that reproduces the shaking produced by earthquakes and demonstrates how structures may respond to an earthquake. The event will include a Q/A session and refreshments will be provided. Learn more and register at www.emergency.ubc.ca/shakeout/earthquake-symposium.
