To: All UBC faculty, staff and executive members of the Alma Mater Society and the Graduate Students Society
Today, the Research Universities’ Council of British Columbia is addressing the British Columbia Legislature’s standing committee on finance to make the case for a significant and strategic, system-wide provincial commitment to post secondary education. Our presentation is called the “Opportunity Agenda for BC”.
The University of British Columbia joins the University of Victoria, Simon Fraser University, the University of Northern BC, Royal Roads University and Thompson Rivers University in an effort that I believe is both timely and crucial.
Armed with compelling data, we draw attention to the growing skills gap in BC. This needs to be tackled now to ensure the present and future competitiveness of our economy. And it can only be addressed, we believe, if BC puts high-quality post-secondary education within the reach of every eligible British Columbian.
We are very much aware of the current challenging fiscal and economic environment in this province and beyond, yet we are calling on the BC government to commit to three essential and urgent interventions:
* Provide a space in a post secondary institution for every qualified British Columbia student;
* Guarantee financial support for students in need; and
* Make a firm commitment to innovation and job creation by maximizing our research investment.
The link provided here takes you to the RUCBC media release issued today and to other supporting documents. You will no doubt read or hear more about this in the media – but I wanted you to be informed directly.
While today’s RUCBC initiative is a general one on behalf of the whole sector, I want to assure you that I will continue to focus on UBC’s specific needs and priorities in my continuing communications with the BC government.
It is my hope that you, as a member of the UBC community, will stand with us and support the initiatives outlined in the Opportunity Agenda for BC in the coming months.
