To: All students, faculty and staff at UBC’s Vancouver campus
Thank you for your patience as we work to complete the University’s current program of major infrastructure projects. The following is an update on the various public realm improvement projects which despite some unexpected delays are now coming to completion:
1) Main Mall (University Boulevard to Agronomy Road) – Work was substantially completed in December 2012. Fencing will remain in place until spring to allow the grass to grow and protect it from damage. Building construction along Main Mall is also now largely complete. Recent projects included Earth Sciences, Sauder School of Business, Beaty Biodiversity, BioSciences Renew, Buchanan Renew and Chemistry Renew.
2) University Boulevard (Wesbrook Mall to East Mall) – Work on the street and sidewalks was substantially completed in December 2012. Manufacture of the custom designed bus shelters has unfortunately been delayed and installation is now targeted for late February 2013. We apologize for any inconvenience that this delay causes for transit users.
3) University Boulevard (East Mall to Main Mall) – Walkways and fountain were completed in December 2012. Installation of the central storm water feature, soft landscape and benches is now targeted for completion in February 2013. Delays in supply of steel components for the storm water feature have pushed completion back from the original target. To prevent damage to concrete from skateboarders, construction fencing will remain around the recently completed fountain and storm water feature until perimeter benches are installed.
4) Memorial Road (East Mall to Music Plaza) – Work was substantially completed in December 2012. Fencing will remain in place until spring to allow the grass to grow and protect it from damage.
Other significant construction projects currently underway include:
New Student Union Building on East Mall (Aug 2014 completion)
Ponderosa Commons Phase 1 at West Mall & University Blvd (Aug 2013 completion) Djavad Mowafaghian Centre for Brain Health at UBC Hospital (Oct 2013 completion)
We apologize for any inconvenience caused by this intense construction activity. To learn more, a regularly updated summary of all campus construction projects is provided on the Infrastructure Development website:
