From: Deputy Vice Chancellor and UBC’s Okanagan campus Principal Deborah Buszard, UBC’s Vancouver Campus Provost and Vice President Academic David Farrar, Vice President Students Louise Cowin, Vice President Human Resources Lisa Castle
We are pleased to provide our campus communities with the report by Nitya Iyer and Shirley Nakata entitled Implementing Inclusion: A Consultation on Organizational Change to Support UBC’s Commitment to Equity and Diversity. You can find the report, and our response here:
This was a standard institutional review process that followed the retirement of Associate Vice President Mr. Tom Patch. The consultation was conducted from January 3 to February 13, 2013, and included meetings with 180 individuals on both main campuses, from every campus group and across our wide range of units and departments. It received 60 written submissions.
The consultation found that there is widespread, passionate support for equity and diversity as a core UBC value, and made recommendations to adopt a new University-wide model.
The new model embeds senior responsibility in four positions: Provost and Vice-President Academic; Provost and Vice-Principal, UBC’s Okanagan campus; Vice President Students and Vice President, Human Resources.
It is led by an Associate Vice President, Equity and Inclusion, and transforms the UBC Equity Office into an enhanced Office of Equity and Inclusion. It expands Ombudsperson services to faculty and staff (at the Vancouver campus in the beginning) and re-positions and strengthens Access & Diversity, creating a range of new positions to dramatically strengthen our commitment across our campuses.
The University has accepted the recommendations of the report, and is moving to implement the new model by August 1, 2013, under the leadership of Acting Associate Vice President, Equity and Inclusion, Dr. Gurdeep Parhar.
For students, faculty and staff who have equity or diversity concerns during the transition, please contact the campus offices listed at the link above.
We want to offer our sincere gratitude to the authors of this report, and to the members of our community who actively participated in this process.
