To: Members of the UBC Community
Welcome back! This week, thousands of new UBC students gathered for Imagine Day at UBC Vancouver and Create Day at UBC Okanagan. The energy and excitement of these events always remind me of the importance of our mission to advance knowledge and create positive change in the world—as individuals and collectively through our connection to UBC and to one another.
In this year’s annual letter, I highlight the work that we are doing together to build a stronger and even more influential UBC. I focus on the following priorities:
Adapting to stay relevant
Universities are finding themselves required to transform yet again, thanks to new learning technologies and new understandings about how people learn. Find out more about UBC’s flexible learning initiative.
Excelling on the research front
Research performance continues to be a key UBC strength. Even so, more collaboration and partnership are crucial to building our research capacity from this point forward. What could that look like?
Expanding childcare and housing options
Additional childcare spaces have been added and more are planned. The Housing Action Plan, now in its implementation phase, will improve housing affordability and choice on the Vancouver campus for faculty, staff and students. Learn more about the Plan.
The international is no longer ‘out there,’ it is who we are in BC and in Canada. Learn about: the search for an Executive Director, International; UBC Vantage College; and the China Council.
Balancing the budget
Universities across the country are facing constrained government funding and global economic uncertainty. Find out how UBC is diversifying its funding sources and blending financial prudence with the imperative to transform and innovate.
Start[ing] an evolution
UBC’s historic development and alumni engagement campaign has passed the $1.2 billion mark. Find out more about how we’re supporting academic priorities and engaging alumni in all aspects of UBC life.
