To: All faculty, staff and student employees at UBC’s Vancouver campus
The Workers Compensation Act was amended last year, creating significant new legislative requirements to prevent and reduce bullying and harassment in the workplace. This includes the obligation of employers to provide training about bullying and harassment to all faculty and staff (including students paid as employees by the University, and students on unpaid practicum as part of their academic program requirements). UBC has developed a brief bullying and harassment online training course to fulfill this legislated requirement.
IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR MANAGERS (management & professional staff and faculty who manage at least one person):
If you supervise faculty, staff, or student employees, you are responsible for arranging online bullying and harassment training for each person under your supervision (including yourself). “Toward a Respectful Workplace – Preventing and Addressing Workplace Bullying & Harassment” is a 15 – 20 minute online training session available at: http://bullyingandharassment.ubc.ca/training-events/. An electronic certificate is provided upon completion of the online training and you are responsible for documenting that each individual has completed the training. All training must be completed by July 31, 2014.
Documentation of training must be stored in one place within your department or faculty. A WorkSafeBC representative can request that you provide proof of training at any time. We encourage you to supplement the training with discussion at your team meetings. If your team does not have access to on-line training, please contact your Local Health & Safety Committee Co-Chair(s) who will coordinate the training for you: http://riskmanagement.ubc.ca/health-safety/local-health-safety-programs/local-health-safety-committees.
On an ongoing basis, you are responsible for arranging and documenting bullying and harassment training of all new hires that you supervise.
IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR FACULTY, STAFF, and STUDENT EMPLOYEES:
Each of us is responsible for the creation of a respectful environment free from bullying and harassment. To ensure you have the information you need, you are required to participate in online training (or face-to-face training for those working in a department without online access).
Your supervisor will discuss the training with you and will require proof of completion. Please provide your manager with the certificate as soon as possible upon completion of the training.
If anyone has any questions about bullying or harassment, please read all material on the bullying and harassment prevention website at http://bullyingandharassment.ubc.ca/, or contact your HR Advisor or Assistant Faculty Relations Manager (http://www.hr.ubc.ca/contact/).
