To: all UBC faculty and staff
I am writing to notify you of changes in the Office of the President. I am delighted to announce three new staff members joining the team:
Dr. Anne Gorsuch, Deputy to the President: University Affairs
Dr. Anne Gorsuch will provide high-level support and advice and step in for me where appropriate. In addition to assisting with the development and implementation of academic strategy, she will facilitate communication between UBC Faculties, Departments and the President’s Office. Dr. Gorsuch will begin her term September 1.
An internationally recognized historian of the Soviet Union, Dr. Gorsuch has significant academic administrative experience. She just completed her term as Head of the UBC History Department where she focused on transparent governance, due process, equity and diversity, and clarity of policy. She is committed to engaged academic governance and excellence in research and teaching.
Dr. Gorsuch received her Bachelor of Arts from Brown University in 1982 and her PhD in History from the University of Michigan in 1992. She is an expert in the cultural and transnational history of the USSR in the twentieth century. Her work has focused on processes of cultural exchange and encounter; the history of tourism and mobility; the cultural history of international relations, and the history of Soviet-Cuban relations. Her most recent book is with Oxford University Press.
David Hurford, Executive Director
In addition to supporting my day-to-day responsibilities, David will focus on strategic planning, issue management, communications and external relations.
With over 20 years of experience working in senior roles with federal, provincial and municipal governments, David has experience working with national agencies, provincial ministries and crown corporations, media, the private sector and non-profit organizations in British Columbia, Ontario and Manitoba. For the past two years, David has served as Director of Communications for Community Living British Columbia, a provincial Crown Corporation that serves adults with developmental disabilities, Autism and FASD.
Anna Lucarino, Director of Operations
In addition to managing day-to-day operations in the President’s Office, Anna will oversee scheduling, event logistics and incoming communications.
Anna has a diverse background, having worked in senior roles in each of the private, public and not-for-profit sectors over the last 12 years, most recently managing the Office of the CEO at Mitacs and previous to this, as Manager of Community Relations in the City of Vancouver Mayor’s Office. Her experience spans from operations to development, government relations and communications.
I would also like to extend my sincere gratitude to Richard Price, Gerald Calderon and Patricia Stevens for their outstanding work during their time in the President’s Office. Richard’s term as Senior Advisor to the President ended in June and he has returned to the Department of Political Science. Gerald will be leaving the Office of the President at the end of the month to take on another position at the University. And, after 11 years at UBC and seven in the Office of the President, Patricia has left UBC, effective June 27th. Each of their contributions have built a strong foundation in the office and benefitted the organization.
Please join me in wishing Patricia, Gerald and Richard all the best in their future endeavours and welcoming Anne, David and Anna to their new roles.
President and Vice-Chancellor
