Dear UBC Community Members:
On September 30, 1915, 379 students comprised the first class of the University of British Columbia. Of those 379 students, 41 had already completed three years at the preceding institution, McGill University College of BC, and so graduated as UBC’s first alumni on May 4, 1916.
As announced in last week’s Installation address (http://www.ubc.ca/newpresident/installation.html), the university will be marking the Centennial of these historic events from September 2015 to May 2016. The objective of the Centennial is to celebrate not only the achievements of the past 100 years, but also to demonstrate to the wider world the exponential curve that the university is on and – most importantly – where we are headed.
There will be institutional milestones to celebrate and many special events that will be planned to mark the 100th anniversary of our first graduating class beginning next September, with the help of the university-wide Centennial Committee. This planning will include an invitation for our campuses, faculties and units to mark the Centennial in your own way to your own communities and audiences.
Accordingly, we are pleased to confirm the establishment of a Centennial Initiatives Fund to help promote university-wide participation through initiatives that celebrate UBC’s impact on the world and highlight the contributions of UBC’s alumni, students, faculty and staff. We are pleased to invite proposals for one-time funding of unit-based Centennial initiatives of up to $10,000 per project.
Please note that your unit does not have to be 100 years old to participate. Any academic or administrative unit may apply for funding, with the endorsement of the head of unit. Other UBC communities such as alumni, students, emeriti and university neighbourhood groups are also invited to submit proposals through their respective senior leadership.
The application guidelines and template are available at http://vpdevelopmentalumni.ubc.ca/call-for-proposals-CIF/. If you have any questions about the Fund, please email firstname.lastname@example.org. The deadline for submissions is December 15, 2014 with funding being allocated in January 2015 for the financial year 2015-16.
We look forward to a momentous Centennial year with the broad participation of the university and its communities!
