Reappointment of Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Principal, UBC Okanagan

The term of Professor Deborah Buszard, Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Principal of UBC Okanagan, is coming to an end in June 2017. Professor Buszard has indicated her willingness to be considered for reappointment. In accordance with Board policy, an Advisory Committee has been struck to examine Professor Buszard’s performance since her first appointment in 2012 and to make a recommendation to the President concerning her reappointment.

I am shocked and very concerned about yesterday’s assault on a student at Totem Park residence. Right now we are focused on supporting the victim and the victim’s family. We are also deeply concerned for the students who witnessed the assault or who have been affected in any other way and we are providing the help they may need. IT Alert: Recent fraudulent emails and ransomware targeting UBC

You may have seen the news that the University of Calgary has recently faced a ‘ransomware’ attack (you may also hear this described as phishing, malware, virus, etc.). UBC is subject to malware attacks on a daily basis and at times various types of ‘ransomware.’ These attacks often come in the form of email attachments, or links, that unsuspecting recipients open or click.

New Sexual Assault Policy for faculty, staff and students

UBC’s first Sexual Assault Policy was presented to the Board of Governors People, Community & International Committee today. The committee received the proposed policy for information and the full Board of Governors will review the policy at its meeting on June 14.

The RCMP has issued a news release today advising of charges laid against two men in relation to a reported break and enter and sexual assault that occurred on April 30 in the 5700 block of Birney Avenue in Vancouver.

Update on UBC sexual assault policy and action plan

UBC is undertaking several coordinated strategies to improve policies and practices that address sexual assault and sexual harassment in our community. I have highlighted below the actions of two groups working toward this aim: the University Sexual Assault Panel who are gathering input on a UBC-wide sexual assault action plan and the Sexual Assault Policy Committee who are developing a new sexual assault policy.

Leadership transition in VP Research and International

After more than a decade of outstanding service to UBC as Vice-President, Research and International, Dr. John Hepburn has announced he is stepping down effective May 28 to assume a new role as Vice-President, Research at the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research in Toronto.

We are delighted to advise that the search committee, after much discussion and deliberation, has constructed a shortlist of seven excellent candidates. The position profile developed through stakeholder consultation has been instrumental in the evaluation of candidates, and we thank the UBC community for your thoughtful input. As a committee, we have been pleased with the genuine level of interest and optimism expressed by all candidates at the prospect of contributing to the ongoing success of UBC as it enters its second century. We are encouraged by the strength and diversity that is represented in this pool of candidates. Our community has been shaken by a distressing incident directed at our LGBTQ+ community members and specifically the Pride Collective at UBC. As we shared in a statement last night, the university received news on February 9 that the pride rainbow flag raised at the opening ceremony for OUTweek (February 5), was burned sometime over the Family Day long weekend.

Reappointment of the Vice President, Students

The term of Dr. Louise Cowin, Vice President, Students, is coming to an end in June 2016. Dr. Cowin has indicated her willingness to be considered for reappointment for the period July 2016 – June 2021. In accordance with Board policy, an advisory committee has been struck to examine Dr. Cowin’s record and to make a recommendation to the President concerning her reappointment.

Next steps in initiatives related to sexual assault response and prevention

UBC has retained Paula Butler of Butler Workplace Solutions as an independent reviewer to conduct a review of UBC’s response to concerns of sexual harassment and sexual assault raised by some UBC students about a fellow student, which became the subject of media coverage. A report will be ready in February and a summary will be made available to the UBC community.

Over the coming days, as we do each year at this time, we will begin celebrating UBC’s newest graduating class with their families and loved ones. At the same time, a new group of students and their families will arrive for our annual ‘Destination UBC’ orientation. These events are always special, but this year is even more significant because it marks the last graduating class of UBC’s first 100 years and the first incoming class of UBC’s next 100 years.

Between now and May 13, 2015, you are invited to submit a suggestion that you believe will create a new revenue stream and/or operating efficiency for the university. A review committee led by the Provost’s offices from both Vancouver and the Okanagan, will consider all suggestions that are submitted. The committee will then share the most beneficial ideas with the appropriate department for further exploration and implementation.

Over the first eight months as President, I have had many wonderful opportunities to meet with dedicated and passionate university staff, faculty, students, and alumni at both campuses. From student roundtables, faculty forums and staff breakfasts to social media exchanges, alumni dialogues and individual meetings, I have learned about UBC from you.

Quick community response leads to arrest

UBC would like to acknowledge the caring actions of the UBC community that alerted them to an incident near Totem Park Residence before 1 am this morning. RCMP and Campus Security were quick to reach the scene and apprehended a suspect, who was arrested and faces charges of attempted sexual assault and assault of a police officer. RCMP have confirmed this incident is unrelated to the 2013 sexual assaults at UBC or the recent assault on the south campus in February.

UBC Approves Plans for New Aquatic Centre

I am pleased to inform you about plans for a new $39.9-million Aquatic Centre on UBC’s Vancouver campus. The project was formally approved by the Board of Governors on June 2nd, 2014.

The new centre will house an Olympic-sized competition pool, 25 metre lap pool, a warm-water family pool with a lazy river, and a large hot tub. The facility will offer a mix of student and community programs: high performance training and competition, student clubs, lessons and drop-in use.

Prevention of Bullying & Harassment in the Workplace – a legal requirement

The Workers Compensation Act was amended last year, creating significant new legislative requirements to prevent and reduce bullying and harassment in the workplace.

Renewing our commitment to equity and diversity

In response to the sexist and racist chants heard during student-led September FROSH events on the Vancouver campus, I convened a Task Force to develop actionable recommendations to address issues of gender-based violence and Aboriginal stereotypes. After the draft Task Force report was released earlier this year, the University community provided valuable feedback on these recommendations.

New Centre for Excellence in Indigenous Health opens at UBC

We are pleased to announce the creation of the UBC Centre for Excellence in Indigenous Health (CEIH). UBC Senate approved this Centre on November 20, 2013, to commence operations on January 1, 2014. The CEIH is now actively pursuing its mandate.

Town Halls – Creating a Student Information System for the Digital Age – A Dialogue for the Future

The University is currently undertaking one of the most wide-scale and impactful initiatives in recent memory: the replacement of our aging Student Information System (SIS). Third reported assault – don’t walk alone at night

The RCMP released a statement advising the community of a sexual assault that occurred on Saturday, October 19, 2013 in the 2500 block of West Mall. This is the third reported stranger sexual assault to occur on campus since the end of September.

We are announcing today the measures we are taking, following our careful consideration of the report by the fact-finding panel charged with looking into the Commerce Undergraduate Society FROSH chant. After extensive review, the University of British Columbia has decided not to sign a license agreement with Access Copyright (AC) based on the model that it has recently negotiated with the Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada (AUCC).

Construction on Main Mall and University Boulevard

As part of UBC’s plan to make Main Mall and University Boulevard (from East Mall to West Mall) the primary pedestrian corridors and the symbolic center of campus, there will be significant construction in these areas between April and September 2012.

At his September 2011 Vancouver campus town hall meeting in Vancouver, UBC President Stephen Toope addressed the issue of animal research, reiterating the University’s commitment to the highest standards in humane animal care, and stating UBC is striving for greater transparency in this area.

ShakeOut BC

The University is participating in ShakeOut BC on October 20 at 10:20 a.m. ShakeOut BC is the largest earthquake drill in Canadian History. Earlier this year, more than 470,000 people participated in the first ShakeOut BC. The drill will be on the third Thursday of October annually.
