To: Faculty and staff in Vancouver and the Okanagan

I am writing to inform you that a global search for a suitable candidate for the position of Provost and Vice-President Academic, UBC Vancouver, is now underway.

The Provost and Vice-President Academic reports to the President and provides vision and leadership in carrying out the university’s strategic plan. Working with the Deans and other university leaders, the Provost will be responsible for guiding and enhancing the academic mission of UBC Vancouver.

She or he will be responsible for the institutional planning and administration of highly complex academic operations, including budgetary planning relating to teaching and learning, and research initiatives. To ensure alignment of the budget with the university’s fundamental academic purposes, the Provost will be responsible for resource allocation decisions in consultation with the Vice-President Finance & Operations.

The Provost will also collaborate closely on system-wide academic issues with the Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Principal and the Provost and Vice-Principal (UBC Okanagan). The Provost is the senior Vice-President at UBC and serves as Acting President in the absence of the President.

In accordance with UBC Policy #18, I have established a committee to support this search process. The committee consists of:

  • Santa J. Ono, Chair
  • Michael Treschow, Board of Governors
  • Celeste Haldane, Board of Governors
  • Veronica Knott, Board of Governors
  • Beverlee Park, Board of Governors
  • Perry Adebar, Faculty of Applied Science
  • Sîan Echard, Faculty of Arts
  • Janice Eng, Faculty of Medicine
  • John Innes, Faculty of Forestry
  • Paschal Okwundu, graduate student
  • Jakob Gattinger, undergraduate student

A member of the President’s Office staff will act as non-voting secretary to the committee.

The search committee invites members of the UBC community to provide feedback on the draft position description and candidate profile (found at http://president.ubc.ca/files/2016/12/UBC-Provost-Position-Desc-and-Candidate-Profile.pdf), along with any comments about the opportunities and challenges ahead of the new Provost in the coming years.

We encourage you to send in nominations or suggestions of candidates for the position. All feedback and suggestions should be sent care of our search consultants at ubcprovost@boyden.com by January 23, 2017, and will be treated confidentially.

Professor Santa J. Ono
President and Vice-Chancellor
