Participate in ShakeOut BC: Drop! Cover! Hold on!

To: Faculty, staff and students in Vancouver and the Okanagan

Join me and participate in ShakeOut BC. On October 20 at 10:20 a.m., practice “Drop! Cover! Hold on!” in the 2016 Great British Columbia ShakeOut earthquake drill.

If you are registered for UBC Alert, you will receive a text message on October 20, announcing the start of ShakeOut BC. UBC Alert is an important part of maintaining safety and security during an emergency on campus. Make sure you register and verify your information on rms.ubc.ca/emergency/personal-emergency-preparedness/.

While UBC continues to upgrade and renew buildings and infrastructure, each of us should actively practice what to do when an earthquake strikes and once the shaking stops. ShakeOut BC is a timely reminder for us to learn the risks, get prepared, and make a plan:

  • Sign up for UBC Alert: rms.ubc.ca/emergency/personal-emergency-preparedness/.
  • Develop an emergency preparedness plan. Understand what to do the moment an earthquake hits. Consider a safe location to contact and reunite with your family and loved ones. This is essential to your state of mind if a disaster hits.
  • Update your emergency supply kit. Assemble basic supplies, as you may need to get by without power or tap water in the event of an earthquake.

We all have a role in making our campuses safe. Be proactive, and learn more about earthquake preparedness at rms.ubc.ca/seismic.
