Reappointment of Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Principal, UBC Okanagan

The term of Professor Deborah Buszard, Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Principal of UBC Okanagan, is coming to an end in June 2017. Professor Buszard has indicated her willingness to be considered for reappointment. In accordance with Board policy, an Advisory Committee has been struck to examine Professor Buszard’s performance since her first appointment in 2012 and to make a recommendation to the President concerning her reappointment.

IT Alert: Recent fraudulent emails and ransomware targeting UBC

You may have seen the news that the University of Calgary has recently faced a ‘ransomware’ attack (you may also hear this described as phishing, malware, virus, etc.). UBC is subject to malware attacks on a daily basis and at times various types of ‘ransomware.’ These attacks often come in the form of email attachments, or links, that unsuspecting recipients open or click.

The RCMP has issued a news release today advising of charges laid against two men in relation to a reported break and enter and sexual assault that occurred on April 30 in the 5700 block of Birney Avenue in Vancouver.

Update on UBC sexual assault policy and action plan

UBC is undertaking several coordinated strategies to improve policies and practices that address sexual assault and sexual harassment in our community. I have highlighted below the actions of two groups working toward this aim: the University Sexual Assault Panel who are gathering input on a UBC-wide sexual assault action plan and the Sexual Assault Policy Committee who are developing a new sexual assault policy.

Leadership transition in VP Research and International

After more than a decade of outstanding service to UBC as Vice-President, Research and International, Dr. John Hepburn has announced he is stepping down effective May 28 to assume a new role as Vice-President, Research at the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research in Toronto.

Presidential search: Shortlist of candidates finalized

We are delighted to advise that the search committee, after much discussion and deliberation, has constructed a shortlist of seven excellent candidates. The position profile developed through stakeholder consultation has been instrumental in the evaluation of candidates, and we thank the UBC community for your thoughtful input. As a committee, we have been pleased with the genuine level of interest and optimism expressed by all candidates at the prospect of contributing to the ongoing success of UBC as it enters its second century. We are encouraged by the strength and diversity that is represented in this pool of candidates. The candidates on the shortlist are diverse in terms of backgrounds, academic disciplines, geographic location, university leadership positions held, gender and ethnicity.

2016/17 Budget Update

With the 2016/17 UBC Vancouver budget process well underway, we would like to provide an update of progress to date, as well as the path forward.

In recent months, there have been discussions at various levels of the university around the 2016/17 budget. This included a two-day workshop at which the Executive and Vancouver Deans came together to review the challenges, opportunities and budget position of each of the Faculties and administrative units.

Statement from the elected members of the UBC Board of Governors

We, the eight elected members of the UBC Board of Governors (students, staff, and faculty) voted to accept the resignation of Dr. Arvind Gupta as President of UBC. We did so after respectful deliberation among all Board members and based on our own observations. None of us was bullied or pressured. We continue to believe that this decision was in the best interests of the university.

Release of the Paula Butler Review Executive Summary

In December 2015, barrister and solicitor Paula Butler, of Butler Workplace Solutions, an independent expert in workplace harassment, was retained by the university to review UBC’s response to concerns of sexual harassment and sexual assault raised by UBC students regarding a fellow student.

Rainbow flag burning incident shakes UBC

Our community has been shaken by a distressing incident directed at our LGBTQ+ community members and specifically the Pride Collective at UBC. As we shared in a statement last night, the university received news on February 9 that the pride rainbow flag raised at the opening ceremony for OUTweek (February 5), was burned sometime over the Family Day long weekend.

Reappointment of the Vice President, Students

The term of Dr. Louise Cowin, Vice President, Students, is coming to an end in June 2016. Dr. Cowin has indicated her willingness to be considered for reappointment for the period July 2016 – June 2021. In accordance with Board policy, an advisory committee has been struck to examine Dr. Cowin’s record and to make a recommendation to the President concerning her reappointment.

Next steps in initiatives related to sexual assault response and prevention

UBC has retained Paula Butler of Butler Workplace Solutions as an independent reviewer to conduct a review of UBC’s response to concerns of sexual harassment and sexual assault raised by some UBC students about a fellow student, which became the subject of media coverage. A report will be ready in February and a summary will be made available to the UBC community.

Today UBC released the summary of a report by the Honourable Lynn Smith, which outlines her findings relating to allegations that, following the publication of a blog post by Professor Jennifer Berdahl on August 8, 2015, the Chair of the Board of Governors or individuals in the Sauder School of Business interfered with her academic freedom or violated relevant UBC policies.

Over the coming days, as we do each year at this time, we will begin celebrating UBC’s newest graduating class with their families and loved ones. At the same time, a new group of students and their families will arrive for our annual ‘Destination UBC’ orientation. These events are always special, but this year is even more significant because it marks the last graduating class of UBC’s first 100 years and the first incoming class of UBC’s next 100 years.
