To: Faculty and staff in Vancouver and the Okanagan

I am pleased to announce three appointments within the Office of the President. As you may be aware, in recent weeks we have conducted searches for a Senior Advisor to the President, a Manager, Communications and an Executive Assistant to the President. I am delighted to confirm that the following appointments have been made:

Senior Advisor to the President
Dr. Emma Cunliffe, Associate Professor, Peter A. Allard School of Law, formally started on November 14, 2016 in the role of Senior Advisor to the President. Dr. Cunliffe is an award winning researcher and teacher whose research focuses on factual reasoning in legal trials. She brings experience using interdisciplinary methods to research complex questions and a track record of fostering an inclusive and mutually respectful institutional environment. In her new role, Dr. Cunliffe will work collaboratively with key stakeholders across the organization, particularly with respect to strategic planning.

Manager, Communications
Mr. Terry Lavender started today in the role of Manager, Communications. Mr. Lavender has many years of experience working at a senior level within university communications, including the University of Toronto, Western University and Simon Fraser University. In his new role, he will oversee communications within the Office of the President in order to communicate UBC’s vision to internal and external stakeholders.

Executive Assistant to the President
Ms. Frances Verzosa, Project Administrator in the Office of the Chief Information Officer (CIO), starts on November 18, 2016 in the role of Executive Assistant to the President. Ms. Verzosa has worked within the Office of the CIO for several years in both project coordinator and executive coordinator roles.

Executive Director
A search is currently underway for an Executive Director within the Office of the President. This position is expected to be filled by the new year.

In addition to welcoming my new team, I would like to extend my sincere gratitude to Dr. Herbert Rosengarten and Rebecca Armstrong for their outstanding work over the last year. They have both played key roles within the Office of the President, supporting Dr. Martha Piper during her interim year.

As a professor emeritus of English, Dr. Rosengarten will continue to be involved in the UBC Legacy Project. Meanwhile, Rebecca will return to her role as Executive Assistant to the Dean in the Faculty of Applied Science. I hope you will join me in wishing them well.
