Search for a new lead for Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion at UBC

If you are a manager of staff whose work is not computer-based, please print this email and display it in a common work area for them to review.

Last fall UBC announced that the Equity and Inclusion Office would be undergoing a leadership change, with the departure of Dr. Sara-Jane Finlay.

I am now pleased to launch a search for a new lead of our Equity and Inclusion Office. As UBC continues to advance its equity, diversity and inclusion initiatives, we will also be exploring ways for this role to provide leadership for accessibility.

The new lead for Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion will work to advance human rights; planning and evaluation; education; and systems change across the university. The Equity and Inclusion Office works in partnership with units across both campuses to embed equity, diversity, inclusion and access into the structure, policies and processes of UBC.

I have convened a search committee under Board Policy AP15. Members include:

  • Elsie Achugbue, Director, Institutional Initiatives, Equity and Inclusion Office
  • Jerry Chen, Associate Vice-President, Human Resources
  • Lesley Cormack, Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Principal, UBC Okanagan
  • Eduardo Jovel, Interim Director, First Nations House of Learning
  • Annie Yim, Acting Deputy Registrar and Director, Human Resources, Enrolment Services
  • Henry Yu, Principal, St. John’s College

You can learn more about the role at https://president3.sites.olt.ubc.ca/files/2022/03/avp_di_brief.pdf. Faculty, staff and students are invited to send comments, related to the position profile, to president.staff@ubc.ca by March 21, 2022.

I would once again like to thank Dr. Sara-Jane Finlay for leading the Equity and Inclusion Office since 2015, and to thank Dr. Margaret Moss for currently leading the office on an interim basis. This role is pivotal for the evolving mandate of equity, diversity and inclusion at UBC.

Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion remains a key strategic priority for me and the university as a whole. I look forward to this process identifying a leader who can continue to help us progress this priority.

Santa J. Ono
President and Vice-Chancellor
