Message to the UBC community

As UBC’s newly appointed Interim President and Vice-Chancellor, I would like to thank UBC Board Chair Nancy McKenzie and the Board of Governors for entrusting me with this responsibility.

It is an honour to take on the position and contribute to this remarkable university. I enjoyed serving as Deputy-Vice Chancellor and Principal, UBC Okanagan from 2012 to 2020 and I look forward to working with you all during this time.

As Interim President and Vice-Chancellor, my responsibility is to ensure that UBC continues on its path as a global leader in teaching, learning and research, and providing a student experience second to none.

I am proud to be a member of the UBC community. The university now spans two magnificent campuses in Vancouver and the Okanagan as well as locations throughout the province. UBC consistently ranks among the top universities globally and our research has an outsized impact on our province, our country and the world. UBC is a dynamic place to learn, reflect, discover and transform the world.

Three years ago, we launched our strategic plan, Shaping UBC’s Next Century. The plan outlines the university’s vision: to inspire people, ideas and actions for a better world. I look forward to working with you to achieve that vision.

I would also like to thank Professor Santa Ono for his outstanding leadership and service over the past six years as President of UBC. He leaves a firm foundation for growing our future success and I wish him all the best in his new role as President of the University of Michigan.

Professor Deborah Buszard
Interim President and Vice-Chancellor
